Air Jordan Retro XI “Concord” - Why the Hype killed the love of the game.

Excuse me for my following rant…

The 2011 Jordan XI Concord release ended many die hard Jordan enthusiasts’ passion for sneakers. Many OG heads that been through the Niketalk and good old ISS are slowly getting rid of their Jordans. Why though? Well for many, the continuous blame for low quality materials while at the same time, the increasing the prices.

Second, you have the resellers. Those who say “You can’t blame the hustle” are the same ones who complain over and over about resellers. Never before has there been so many online “Big Cartel” shops that want to make an extra buck off a Retro. Several of my sneaker buddies are now resellers whom I used to chat regurlarly in forums. Back when there was absolutely no hype on every Kobe release. Back when the LeBron James signature line had no skittle looking, South Beach colorways. Back when Retro Jordans stayed available online for more than just 10 minutes. There was no twitter, no stupid blog to hype a limited colorway, no corny shoe customizers, no YouTube sneaker videos, nothing. It was a good time to be a sneaker head. Now, it’s a hassle just to buy a shoe that you like. Ever since the Concord release, every single Retro Jordan has sold out online and at my local malls. The Jordan 4 Cements, the Jordan 10 “Chicago”, and even the Jordan 10 “Stealths”…. ?! REALLY ?! … Yes, I’m aware that most Retro’s sell out eventually, but not minutes of release. Especially at a consistent rate.

But probably the biggest upset of them all, was because of the hundreds upon hundreds of early release pairs, also known as the Grey Sneakers (read more about it here via SoleSupremacy). Don’t get me wrong, these pre-release sneakers were around long before 2011, but the Concord definitely gave this variant industry a boost in sales and popularity. Many were walking in their icy blue soled Concords before Christmas just so they could avoid the madness. However, little did they know that the very pairs on their feet weren’t even inspected by Jordan Brand or Nike. Would they care? Probably not. Would I? Hell yeah. Would you brush your teeth with Colgate Toothpaste knowing that the company didn’t approve of it? I wouldn’t. I want my shoes straight from retailers knowing that it isn’t a Hong Kong variant.

Anyways, my point is that I envy those who started collecting sneakers before me. They didn’t have to deal with all this reseller, early release crap. Thankfully, I only plan to buy about six Jordan Retros throughout the year. By the way, if the Jordan Brand decides to retro the AJ XI “Breds” this upcoming Holiday, it’s going to be the worse sneaker release yet.

Here is Derrick Rose in the Fire Red 5’s back in High School.
Pretty crazy to see him wear Jordans huh? Leaves me to think what the possibilities Nike/jordan could create by having a Chicago Bull player back in their hands.

Air Jordan “Concord” XI Retro Guide.
When will it release?
December 23, 2011.
Where can I get a pair?
Footlocker, Footaction, Champs, Finishline, and other chain retailers. Mom & Pop stores, boutiques, and stores with Nike accounts will receive them in much more limited numbers. Each store should have one shoe per customer. If you want multiple pairs, I suggest you bring a few friends.
Online at eastbay, Nike.com, Finishline.com etc..
What are my chances and how many does each store get?
If you want a high chance on getting a pair, we advise you to hit up your closest retailer with the biggest volume. Meaning if there’s a HUGE Footlocker in your area, they most likely will get more pairs to sell due to the stores size. Most stores will receive at least 12 pairs to 48 pairs depending on each store. Sizes range from GS (girls/women sizes) to adult should be available at retails stores while boutiques may only get adults sizes.
What if I can’t camp out? Will they release online?
Yes, they will release at major online retailers. The release will be at Midnight (Eastern Time, 9PM Pacific Time), but make sure you’re on the site 15 minutes early! Make sure you are logged in and all your payment information is ready to go. Be aware that thousands of people are trying to buy the same shoe at the same time, so the servers may be slow. I would suggest to have a couple of different sites open to purchase.
Also, even if you are able to purchase, your order may be cancelled due to some stores not being able to fulfill it. Sometimes they take more orders than they should so be aware of that.
Once they sell out, will they have more? Restock?
Most chain retailers will not restock once they sell out of pairs, but it is a possibility. The only places they’ll have more Concords will be online at random times. Typical sizes that sell out the fastest are size 9.5-11.
Do you have any advice on camping?
If you want a guaranteed pair, I suggest you plan EARLY. Here are a few tips from my personal experience:
Call your local strore as the release date (RD) comes closer. I usually call the day prior just so your information is accurate as possible. But consistently call whenever you get a chance.
If you plan to camp out at mall, make sure your spot is safe and secure. Ask/call the mall security and ask them which doors. Last time I went, I camped out at a door the ended up not even opening. So know which doors will open and which one will open FIRST!
Know which store you are planning to go to. Some malls have multiple shoe stores and all of them may open at different times, as well as different amounts in stock. So pick your spot wisely. The more pairs, the higher your odds are of leaving with a pair in hand.
NEVER CAMP ALONE. There are a lot of reports of people getting hurt, stolen from, and even killed for the sneaker releases (Foamposites). Google it. Always bring a friend to go with you even if they aren’t into shoes. Bring snacks to keep you full and be prepared for the cold weather!
What time should I go?
Depending on where you live, the times may vary. If you live in an area that usually sells out of Jordan Retros then you should go as early as possible. If your store sold out of the Retro 3’s within minutes of release, expect this release to be the same. Try checking the night before (Dec. 22 6PM-10PM) to see if a line is formed. If not, then I suggest you line up and be the FIRST one there. Again, it’s really up to you.
Kay, that’s it. Hopefully this guide helps you out. If you have any further questions, feel free to shoot me an /ask at my tumblr. Good luck to all of you on obtaining your pair. Thanks again!

Just reminding the masses before the big release.
Remember, BE SMART and do your homework by calling your local spots and see what time they open. It’s up to you on how early you should go. Don’t ask me when the best time to camp is. If there is a lot of demand for Jordans where you live, then be early. Think about previous releases and if they sold quick, then you bet your ass it’ll sell out within 5 minutes.
PICK UP YOUR PHONE. CALL YOUR LOCAL SPOT/STORE. AND ASK! Good luck kids.
